A brief history.
You can see my CV in PDF format here or read the extended version below!
My first experience in the field of magazine design was working on the now-defunct Air UK's inflight magazine, way back in 1991. I then did the advertorials for the BBC's Gardeners' World and Homes And Antiques titles, and freelanced on Radio Times. I then went on to working with The Illustrated London News Publications, laying out their Orient Express, Livewire and Eastern and Oriental titles. I also freelanced in the Emap, NatMags, Conde Naste, Redwood and IPC magazine houses, working on Tatler, M&S Magazine, Amateur Photographer, Photo Technique, Shooting Times and What Camera.
Beady Eye Design Ltd. was then made sole designer of Outdoor Photography, Black & White Photography, Furniture & Cabinetmaking, The Router, Woodcarving, Woodturning and The Dolls' House titles for GMC Publications, marking my exit from the freelance arena at that time and the employment of additional designers.
Beady Eye then also became sole designer of Big Cheese Magazine for Big Cheese Publications Ltd.
Outside of magazine design, we designed right across the print spectrum. Beady Eye were the CD and artwork designers for Revco Records and Vivid Recordings; we designed many books for Longmans Publishing and IMP Publishing; we designed promotional literature and annual reports for many businesses, including the Royal National Institute For The Blind, the Ravenswood Charity and Fieldwork International.
As an offshoot, I also set up, ran and sold Junk UK, a clothing company dealing in the skateboard, snowboard and surfing markets, selling in over 30 shops in the UK and as far afield as France, Spain, America, Canada, Australia, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
In 2002 I moved from London to Cornwall and scaled down the business to just myself.
In 2007 I set up, ran and ultimately sold Global Boarders Ltd., a surf vacations company and retail shop, and GB Boardsports Ltd., a surf school, both located in Cornwall. I designed the complete identity for both companies and attendant flyers, posters, van liveries, t-shirts, rash vests and so on. I then set up GB Boardriders CIC (now renamed Shifting Horizons), a Community Interest Company using Forest School as a route to re-engaging with disadvantaged young people. I then sold the surf companies whilst retaining a Directorship in Shifting Horizons which continues its valuable work today.
In 2013 I completely redesigned the Royal Photographic Society Journal for EC1 Publishing.
From 2013-2015 I designed two e-magazines - Wild Planet Photo Magazine and Landscape Photography Magazine for The Ultimate Image Publications Ltd.
From 2017-present I have been doing fabric designs for Sunbeam Jackie Ltd., and designed four books (so far) for Extradition Publishing. I am still the sole designer of Vive Le Rock! Magazine and have designed more than 50 issues for them since 2010. I also sell paintings; in the past year I have also done work for Jagermeister, Major Drinks, Mounts Bay Sailing Club and Kendal Calling music festival.
